Private Duncan Smith and Private Lee North, both aged 24 and serving with the 1st Battalion, The Queen's Lancashire Regiment, were members of a military Green Goddess crew called to fight a fire in Westvale, Kirkby, on 29 November 2002. Arriving at the scene, neighbours warned them that Kelly Turner and her baby son Jay, only four weeks old, were trapped in an upstairs flat. The soldiers succeeded in reaching them with a ladder and carried both to safety. Chief Superintendent Forrester, in presenting the commendation, paid tribute to the professionalism and discipline of all the Armed Force personnel who have provided emergency fire cover on Merseyside during the recent industrial action. |
