Mr Duncan Smith has written to Downing Street asking for officials to make the "necessary arrangements". He has also called on Tony Blair to report to MPs on his talks with George W Bush. Mr Duncan Smith has claimed mixed messages from the Government have been confusing for troops heading to the Gulf. He said his visit would show them they were supported by politicians of all parties. Mr Duncan Smith wrote: "Given that the orders have now been given and that there soon will be substantial numbers of troops in the Gulf to impose the UN resolution, it is important at such a time for our forces to understand that their endeavours are supported by politicians including the Leader of the Opposition. "I am hence writing to suggest that I visit the troops in the Gulf at some point after their arrival. I would be grateful if your office could get in touch with mine to make the necessary arrangements." In a second letter, Mr Duncan Smith urged the Prime Minister to go before the Commons on Tuesday to report on his meeting with President Bush. |
