Officials say the move could pave the way for deliveries of aid for Iraqi civilians within 48 hours. Members of 42 Commando carried out searches of residential and industrial areas surrounding the port overnight. They were given the task after other Allied forces moved further north. Australian and US mine clearance teams are preparing the port to receive a shipment of aid from the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Sir Galahad. The vessel is carrying water, food, medical supplies and other emergency relief for civilians caught up in the conflict. Brigadier Jim Dutton, commander of 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines, said that could happen within 48 hours. The port will be under the control of Britain's 17 Port and Maritime Regiment, which will be responsible for guiding ships into port and unloading them when they arrive. |
