Protesters Target HMS Ark RoyalMon, January 13, 2003Source: Ananova NewsAnti-war protesters have gathered on the banks of a Scottish loch to protest against the arrival of HMS Ark RoyalAnti-war protesters have gathered on the banks of a Scottish loch to protest against the arrival of HMS Ark Royal. The aircraft carrier is berthed at the Glen Douglas defence munitions base on Loch Long. It is undergoing final preparations before heading for the Persian Gulf. The ten demonstrators, who were outnumbered by the media, held a 12ft-long white banner which read: "No more war. Hands off Iraq. End the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land." A helicopter hovered sky above them and they responded by making peace signs at it. The small group then moved from the banks of the loch to the main gate of the base, where they staged a peaceful protest. One of the protesters shouted at the crew: "Don't go and kill people." Jane Tallents, chairperson of Scottish CND, condemned the "hypocrisy" of the British Government. She said: "We, like the majority of people in this country, are against that war. "It amounts to hypocrisy to go and wage war against a country that possibly may have weapons of mass destruction, when Britain and America have these weapons." |
