A Royal Marine killed during a river ambush in southern Iraq has been named by the Ministry of Defence

A Royal Marine killed during a river ambush in southern Iraq has been named by the Ministry of Defence. Marine CR Maddison, of 40 Commando, was on one of two river launches which were ambushed as they attempted to destroy Iraqi units along the Al Faw Peninsula.

Several other soldiers were injured in the rocket and machine gun attack.

A second soldier killed in a crash in Kuwait yesterday was also named by the MoD as Lance Corporal SA Brierly, with the 212 Signals Squadron.

No further details are available for either man but both families have been informed.

It takes the number of British troops killed during the war to 25.

Marine Maddison was with 40 Commando, which is based in Taunton, Somerset.

Lance Corporal Brierley belonged to 212 Signal Squadron, 1 (UK) Armoured Division HQ & Signal Regiment, which is based in Herford, central Germany.
