Iraq has approved the use of American spy planes over its territory

Iraq has approved the use of American spy planes over its territory and pledges to pass legislation next week outlawing the use of weapons of mass destruction.

The issue of the U2 plane had been a key demand by inspectors along with its failure to pass legislation outlawing weapons of mass destruction.

The Iraqi government had blocked inspectors from using the planes which the UN said they needed in their search for any weapons of mass destruction.

Mohamed al-Douri, Iraq's ambassador to the UN, said: "The inspectors are now free to use the American U2s as well as French and Russian planes."

Mr Al-Douri delivered the letter of Iraq's acceptance to the UN. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission.
