The first British war casualties have arrived home for hospital treatment

The first British war casualties have arrived home for hospital treatment. Three people arrived at Stansted airport today on a VC10 military flight from Kuwait via Cyprus.

The MoD refused to comment on the extent of their injuries, condition or whether they were members of the Army, RAF or Royal Navy.

The MoD confirmed that they were the first battle casualties to be flown back and treated in the UK.

Two have been taken to Broomfield Hospital, in Chelmsford, Essex, and one to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, Essex.

A spokesman for Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust said: "Broomfield Hospital has admitted two members of the armed services who are now receiving the expert care and attention that they need.

"The MoD requests that the media allow the patients and their families privacy at this difficult time. The trust has emergency plans in place to deal with events such as this and our services will continue as normal."

It is believed at least one of the patients is being treated at the hospital's specialist burns unit.

A spokesman for Princess Alexandra Hospital said: "We have been working for the last few weeks on contingency plans for accepting casualties from the conflict.

"We are the nearest hospital to Stansted and we believe all the local hospitals have been involved with these plans along with the airport, health authority and MoD.

"It is a privilege to be one of the first hospitals in the country to be caring for serviceman coming back from the Gulf."
