Deepcut soldier shot dead

Detectives have launched a murder inquiry after a soldier serving at Deepcut barracks in Surrey was found shot dead.

Mario O'Brien Clarke was found outside a block of flats in Hackney, east London.
The victim had been shot once and was declared dead at the scene at about 5.50pm on Boxing Day, Scotland Yard said.  He was about halfway through his training at Deepcut and was attached to the Royal Logistical Corps. His family have been informed.

Detectives believe there is no link between Mr Clarke's death and his role at Deepcut, where four soldiers have been found shot dead in mysterious circumstances.
"The victim's occupation is not linked to the inquiry at this time," a police spokeswoman said.  Police say they are keeping an open mind about motive.

It is believed Mr Clarke was shot by a black man outside Woolpack House in Morning Lane. An inquest has been opened and adjourned.
The murder is being investigated by officers from the Met's Operation Trident, which investigates black-on-black crime.

Anyone with information is asked to ring the incident room on 020 8785 8056.
