A landmine has exploded on a road in eastern Afghanistan, minutes after a convoy from the BBC passed by. Yar Mohammed, security chief in the region, said his officials were investigating whether the BBC staff were the target of the explosion, in which no-one was hurt.

Nine men were arrested in connection with the powerful blast, which went off about nine miles from Tora Bora.

Mohammed said the convoy of five vehicles was travelling to Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, when the land mine exploded.

It is not clear whether the device was triggered by remote control.

Babrak Mian Khel, a BBC employee in Jalalabad, said his convoy was returning from Tora Bora where they had taken some footage.

He said no-one was injured and would not speculate on whether the BBC was the intended target.

He said: "The explosion was very intense. It is very lucky that there were no injuries. The convoy had just passed minutes before the explosion."
