The bodies of two Turkish pilots whose jet was shot down by Syria on June 22 have been located.

Turkey's military said it was working to retrieve the remains from the bottom of the Mediterranean.

"The bodies have been recovered (from the) seabed and work is under way to bring them to surface," it said in a statement posted on its website.

Turkish forces were using a specialised ship to recover the wreckage of the plane, which is some 1,000 metres (3,300ft) underwater.

Syrian forces shot down the RF-4 jet last month, with the country insisting the aircraft was flying inside its airspace.

This is disputed by Turkish officials who assert it was fired on in international airspace after accidentally straying into Syria's airspace for only a few minutes.

In an interview with a Turkish newspaper this week, Syria's President Bashar al Assad said he wished his forces had not shot the jet down.

He also repeated his regime's position that they had not known the identity of the plane at the time.

Relations between the two countries hit a new low after the incident. Turkey even sent troops and military vehicles towards its border with Syria.
