Troops board helicopters as they move out for the biggest-ever offensive on lawless Taliban badlands.
Operation Strike of the Sword began with a huge assault by 4,000 marines yesterday at Dawa in Helmand.
It is the first large-scale op since President Barack Obama ordered the deployment of 17,000 extra troops.
Brig Gen Larry Nicholson hailed its "massive size" and speed.
