Ammunition Technical Officers were called to deal with pipe bomb after terrorists attempted to hit a West Belfast police station for the second time in a month.

Senior members of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that EOD teams had been summoned and the area evacuated after a device was spotted in the grounds of the Woodbourne facility at 15:40 hours on Saturday.

The team confirmed that the object was a pipe bomb that had failed to detonate.

West Belfast Area Commander Ch Insp Emma Mooney said it was “sheer luck” that nobody had been killed or injured in the two attempted attacks on the station.

She added: “The people responsible have one clear aim – to kill or injure police officers and staff. There is absolutely no justification for these actions.

“People in West Belfast do not want violence perpetrated on their doorsteps or on their behalf – as a community we are looking to the future and moving forward.”

The latest find follows a string of attempted terrorist strikes in recent weeks.

The attacks have included the placing of booby trap devices under the cars of an Army Major, a serving PSNI officer and a member of police staff.
