The former enemy fighters, who had been operating in the north-west Badghis province, also took part in a public act of repentance attended by Afghan VIPs.
In a speech, Badghis province Governor Dilbar Jan Arman Shinwari strongly condemned the actions of the Taliban and praised the bravery of former insurgents who had abandoned their weapons and chosen peace instead.
Acts like this are a clear demonstration that the path weíre taking is the correct one towards reconstruction and progress,î he said, adding that other insurgent groups should follow the example of those making a new commitment.
The renouncement is the latest in a series of encouraging signs that Taliban fighters are finding themselves increasingly isolated from communities in some areas.
It also suggests that people are now increasingly embracing the political process.
As reported on MoDOracle.com, some village elders in Helmand province recently decided to expel troublemakers following the arrival of British troops on Op Black Prince.
