Stretcher Soldier 'Rose & Fought On'

Saturday, November 22, 2008

Wounded soldier Lee French climbed off a stretcher to carry on fighting after a Taliban bullet shattered his pelvis in Afghanistan.

He led his patrol in a vicious firefight as they battled their way to safety from an ambush.

And yesterday hero Lee, 31, said: “I was running around with a broken pelvis, barking orders like a lunatic.

“But the pain is in the back of your mind. You’re the commander — the guys look to you.”

The injured hero went back into battle against around 60 rebels despite being without any body armour — as medics had already removed it to check his wound.

Sergeant French, of 1st Battalion The Rifles, is now recovering back home in Plymouth — on crutches after four ops.

Doctors say it will take him four to six months to recover. But brave Lee, who has kept the bullet that hit him, is adamant he will be join his men before then.

He told his colleagues still fighting in Musa Qala: “Keep your heads down and stay safe. I’ll be back.”

Lee is backing the Help for Heroes charity, hoping to raise £6million to build a swimming pool and gym complex at the Armed Forces’ Headley Court rehabilitation centre in Surrey.
