Soldier Charged With Attempted Murder

Tuesday, March 09, 2010

A bomb disposal expert was last night charged with the attempted murder of his pregnant wife and her eight-year-old son in a car explosion.

Nicholas Fabian, 32, of Vigo, near Meopham, Kent, will appear at Dartford magistrates court today, Kent police said. He is also charged with the unlawful possession of ammunition.

His wife, Victoria, suffered serious leg injuries from the blast on Friday in a car park in Vigo. Doctors believe her unborn child escaped unharmed.

Her son, who was also in the car at the time, was taken to hospital as a precaution, but was discharged after being kept in for observation.

Mrs Fabian was taken to Darent Valley hospital in Dartford before being transferred to a London hospital, but she is not in a life threatening condition.

In a statement, relatives said: "The family is deeply saddened and shocked by Friday's incident. At the moment all our energy and attention is focused on supporting Vicky and her children. Vicky is in the best place and has started her long road to recovery. We would like to request that our privacy be respected."

Nicholas Fabian's mother, Kathleen Mitchell-Hewson, said her son was due to be sent to Afghanistan as a reservist, having left the army in 2003.

The Ministry of Defence did not comment on Fabian's army links and said the incident was a matter for Kent police.

Villagers described hearing a massive explosion before smoke could be seen rising above the car park."I went out with my mum and her partner and she was in the driver's seat screaming," said Vincent Redman, 17.

"Her legs were shredded – one was badly burnt and the other was all bloodied."

Tracy Daniels said "It was like a boom noise in the distance."
