'Rip Off' £600K Donated By ITV

ITV are to give £616,000 of phoneline scam money to the Help for Heroes appeal.

The move comes after we challenged ITV executive chairman Michael Grade to use the money to support wounded troops.

The donation – the biggest yet – puts the charity close to its target to improve facilities at Headley Court rehab centre in Surrey.

Sun readers have already helped raise £4million by buying special wristbands.

Help for Heroes founder Bryn Parry said: “Benefiting wounded servicemen and women seems a very fitting way to distribute the money.”

In total ITV are donating £7.8million to charities – the sum left unclaimed by viewers ripped-off in the phone-ins fiasco.

Three other forces’ charities will also get £616,000 – mental health organisation Combat Stress, families support charity SSAFA and the Royal British Legion.

An ITV source said: “Thanks to The Sun, the nation is now aware of wounded troops’ immense need. We are just pleased to help them.”

Another third of the pot – £2.5million – is going to the Princess Royal Trust for Carers and the final third to local charities.
