Para Hero Ready For Action

Monday, March 15, 2010

War hero Tom Neathway shows his courage as he practises for a parachute jump - despite having lost both legs and his left arm.

Defiant Tom, 26 - a corporal in 2 Battalion, the Parachute Regiment - was blown up by a Taliban bomb in Afghanistan.

But he hopes his solo parachute jump will convince Army chiefs that he is fit to return to the front line.

He will make the 3,000ft jump into water at Poole, Dorset, using a special Steerable 22 military parachute that will open automatically. He will use his right arm to steer down to the water before being picked up by boat.

Tom, from Worcester, has already done five tandem jumps with another parachutist, and practises weekly at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

He said: "I hope this jump will show what I'm capable of. The more I do, the further forward I'll get in Afghanistan - that is my ambition."

Tom aims to return to his role as a frontline sniper, the job he was doing when hit by the blast two years ago.
