The announcement followed talks between Mr Fogh Rasmussen and the Pakistani Prime Minister and Foreign Minister as well as senior officers in the military.
A spokesman for NATO said the alliance and Pakistan agreed they shared a strategic interest in the stabilisation of Afghanistan “for the benefit of the entire region”.
The spokesman added: “Mr Fogh Rasmussen also proposed to work towards an enhanced political relationship between NATO and Pakistan, which was welcomed.
“Finally it was agreed to step up practical military co-operation with regard to the security region between Pakistan and Afghanistan as well as more generally.”
As previously reported on MoDOracle.com, NATO leaders have been steadily stepping up co-operation with Pakistan, which is seen as key to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) efforts to stabilise Afghanistan.
The border region between the two countries has proved problematic, with the Taliban moving personnel and equipment through it to fuel the Afghan insurgency.
Pakistan has also faced a number of internal attacks from Taliban-linked terrorists.
