Thursday, September 02, 2010

Details of Second World War soldiers reported as missing in action are among historic information being published online for the first time.

Family history website Ancestry.co.uk launched more than 200 years of newspaper clippings from the 18th century to 1976, including obituaries and details of unclaimed wills.

More than 40,000 births, 64,000 marriages and 95,000 deaths are included in 335,000 newspaper cuttings, including missing soldiers' names.

Details of soldiers who fought in the First World War are also in the Andrews Newspaper Index Cards, which are taken from national and regional newspapers.

Simon Ziviani from Ancestry.co.uk said: "The Andrews Newspaper Index Cards will be particularly useful for those tracing ancestors who escaped other historical sources, such as soldiers who were tragically lost in conflict.

"The information included in this collection is vast and anyone who finds a record of their ancestor will surely discover some truly unique details about them."
