The FUW has slammed the Ministry of Defence after it emerged that less than 20% of the lamb it served troops was British.

Its president, Gareth Vaughan, said government agencies, organisations and the public needed to buy food more responsibly – for instance, 75% of lamb served in British hospitals is still imported.

The FUW has begun supporting the Wales Fair Trade Forum, which helped to make Wales the first ever Fair Trade Nation.

Quick payment

SOME 82.5% of farmers in Wales received European single payments on the first day of the new payment window, compared to 75% last year.

Rural affairs minister Elin Jones confirmed that £183m was paid into farmers’ bank accounts at the start of December.

More than 85% of Welsh farmers are expected to receive their payments by Christmas.

Badger review

THE NFU has abandoned attempts to secure a judicial review of Defra’s decision not to allow badger culls in England. The union acted after guidance from Natural England but said it may examine the possibility of a review on a separate point of law.

Beef brand bid

THE Welsh Black Cattle Society launched an ambitious action plan at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair to prevent outlets selling foreign beef under the prestigious brand name.

Included in the policing of the brand will be DNA testing of meat and spot checks on premises.

Beauty Barn

TOP prize in Wales YFC’s annual Enterprise Scheme went to Sioned Jones, who recently opened a “Beauty Barn and Day Spa” in a converted barn on her parents 300-acre beef farm near Llandysul.

The second prize under the scheme was won by Carmarthenshire carpenter Bedwyr Rees.

Third prize went to Mairwen Davies who runs the Strand cafe and restaurant in Builth Wells.

Hong Kong deal

PWLLHELI-based Calon Lân has agreed a deal to supply its avocado oil to Hong Kong’s equivalent of Harrods.

The product is now available in the Great Food Hall and Taste Stores to cater for its use in a wide range of oriental dishes.

The deal was clinched following initial talks at the International Food Exhibition at London docklands in March 2007.
