Progress in Kosovo and across the wider Balkans was high on the agenda when the NATO Secretary General travelled to Albania for a series of high-level talks.

Alliance Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen met the country’s Prime Minister, Foreign and Defence Ministers and President during his visit to the capital Tirana. There were discussions on how former war-torn countries are rising to new democratic challenges.

Despite Kosovo’s declaration of independence from Serbia two years ago, the country has seen now seen the presence of a significant multinational force for more than a decade – and the operation shows no signs of ending just yet.

There have also been sporadic clashes between the Ethnic Albians, who make up the overwhelming majority of the population, and resident Serbs.

In addition there have been complications arising from Kosovo’s independence declaration, with not all countries agreeing to recognise the former province’s new status.

In other discussions, the NATO Secretary General praised Albania for its contribution to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.
