The Metropolitan Police officer, who is sponsored by MoDOracle.com plus sister websites PoliceOracle.com and Uniformdating.com, has been put through his paces by soldiers from the battalion in preparation for his punishing 900-mile journey from London to Sroda Weilkopolska, which begins on April 1.
And WO2 Gary Douglas, Unit Welfare Warrant Officer with 1 Cldm Gds, was delighted with the strong support shown to the Army by the police.
“We have been running our Afghan Awareness campaign and have received some great backing from Andy – so we have been helping with his training.
He laughed: “At the start his feet were killing him and he was spending a fair bit on getting them seen to. Fortunately he gets free treatment from a chiropodist in Aldershot now.”
Seery (43), whose father served with the Royal Signals in theatres including Aden and Borneo, decided to undertake his birdman challenge after having surgery and feeling an affinity with recovering British soldiers.
Nicknamed the Mad Cop, the officer-turned-birdman said he was also hoping to raise the profile of the police. He added: “Whenever you hear about the police, it is inevitably because something has gone wrong somewhere.
“But I also know that there is a big affinity between the troops and the emergency services and I know that Help for Heroes is a charity that they would want to support.”
Seery admitted, however, that training with the British Forces had been testing. He said with a smile: “The Army doesn’t muck about when it comes to getting you in shape and I’ve been treated very much as one of the boys.”
Meanwhile London Mayor Boris Johnson has thrown his weight behind the marathon man after meeting him at the Capital’s Assembly building to wish him the best of luck.
Johnson told MoDOracle.com: “Andy is supporting a great cause in Help for Heroes and will also raise the profile of London policing on his travels.
“I think I am in the same place as a lot of other people when it comes to the Armed Forces – they are very close to my heart. Soldiers are doing a difficult job in demanding circumstances and they deserve our full support.”
