"We are walking on a tightrope."
Basic medical pouches had still not turned up when his Welsh Guards platoon went on patrol in Helmand, Afghanistan.
Lt Evison, 26, was shot in the shoulder. The first to tend him had no pouch. Vital Hemcom bandages - part of the kit - are used to "glue" arteries.
Five minutes were lost finding a comrade who did have them. The hero was airlifted to Birmingham's Selly Oak hospital where he died of complications.
A pathologist grimly told his inquest: "He bled to death." In his diary, Lt Evison also said his men lacked water and food. He raged: "It is disgraceful." The Birmingham inquest continues.
