The Governor of Helmand province has paid tribute to the courage and resilience of Taliban hostages who were freed following a NATO op in southern Afghanistan.

After visiting the 25 men released in an action carried out by troops from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and their Afghan counterparts, Governor Mangal said they had seen the brutality and ruthlessness of the enemy first hand.

And he was optimistic that they would sign up for service with the Afghan National Army or police to prevent the Taliban from gaining ground.

As reported on MoDOracle.com, the men had been found at a Taliban jail in the Musa Qala area of Helmand province following a firefight between troops and insurgents.

It is believed some of the hostages were killed by the enemy during the skirmish. The remaining captives were debriefed and given medical treatment.

Governor Mangal said: “For those young men wanting to return to their districts, we will instruct district officials to observe steps regarding their safety.

“Hopefully they will volunteer to join the Afghan National Army or police because, during their imprisonment, they will have suffered Taliban brutality.”
