Two insurgents were shot dead during the action – which targeted a Taliban commander – as they attempted to contact multinational and Afghan troops.
The ISAF spokesman stressed that the enemy leader had been wanted in connection with opium growing and extorting money from Afghan civilians.
He added: “After additional searching of the compound, the prisoners were found along with several improvised explosive devices, two AK-47s, four 105mm mortar rounds and a large amount of home-made explosives.
“The prisoners were taken to an ISAF base where they are currently undergoing medical screening and debriefing. Officials from the Ministry of Interior and our forces are identifying the men and determining their status.”
The action follows a recent ISAF raid on suspected Taliban compounds in Musa Qala, Helmand, where 24 men who appeared to have been tortured were freed.
As reported on MoDOracle.com, the combined NATO and Afghan National Army (ANA) force had come under heavy fire as they moved on the compounds.
More than a dozen insurgents were shot dead during the contact at the illegal jail, which was believed to be run by a Taliban commander in the British-held Sangin area. A weapons cache was also unearthed and destroyed.
The freed Taliban hostages later had the opportunity to meet Helmand province Governor Gulab Mangal, who urged them to become members of the ANA having experienced the Taliban’s ruthlessness and brutality first-hand.
