Sergeants John Kehoe and Stanley Mullenger were killed in late 1941 when their bomber was shot down over Holland.
Their companions – Warrant Officer Christopher Saunders and Sergeant James D’Arcy – were buried by Nazi troops.
But the corpses of John, 19, and Stanley, 21, remained hidden until last year.

Then, the twin-engined Hampden was dug up by the Dutch forces “as a mark of respect and to show gratitude”.
The sergeants, from 49 Squadron, were still inside.
They were reburied in a shared coffin this week at a military ceremony at Bergen, Holland, attended by 300 people. John’s sister Margaret Walsh, 88, made the journey from Tullamore, Co Offaly, Ireland.
She said: “I wanted to say goodbye to him after all these years.” |
