Brigadier Gordon Backing Crusade

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

The Sun’s new Help for Heroes campaign has won the backing of the top British commander in Afghanistan.

Brigadier Gordon Messenger leads the 8,300 UK servicemen and women fighting the Taliban in Helmand.

Due to a deadly enemy bombing campaign, his Royal Marines and soldiers of 3 Commando Brigade have lost 32 in action and suffered 156 seriously wounded over their six-month tour.

They are the worst casualty figures since the Paras arrived three years ago.

Wearing a Help for Heroes wristband, Brig Messenger, 46, said it has been a highly successful tour but “not without cost”.

He added: “Like others in senior positions across defence, I am committed to providing the lasting care and support for growing numbers of our bereaved families and seriously injured.

Courage

“I am extremely grateful for the invaluable assistance and support from Help for Heroes and other service charities in making this happen. The new campaign to fund the building of recovery centres is one that has my full support.”

The highly decorated senior officer also heaped huge praise on his brave troops.

Brig Gordon — who won a Distinguished Service Order during the Iraq war — added: “Every day, the men and women of 3 Commando Brigade and our attached units have performed superbly in extremely challenging conditions.

“They have shown great strength of character, courage, determination, camaraderie and fighting spirit.

“Many good friends and fine soldiers have lost their lives, and many more have been seriously injured.

“We have all been profoundly touched by this and our thoughts often turn to those who have lost loved ones on this tour, or who are struggling to overcome injury”.
