'Bomb Magnet' Comes Home

Monday, July 26, 2010

A hero soldier has been dubbed "bomb magnet" by pals after surviving 15 Taliban bids to blow him up.

Sgt Maj Patrick Hyde ran a daily gauntlet of attacks in Afghanistan as he ferried vital supplies to Brit outposts.

The dad of two was blasted 11 times by booby trap bombs while in a vehicle and twice on foot. His Mastiff armoured troop carrier was hit twice by rockets.

But he escaped virtually unscathed as his unit - A Company 4 Rifles - was attacked 500 times and faced 200 bombs during six months in Sangin.

Patrick, 34, now back in Britain, said he would "go back tomorrow given half the chance".

His six-man team spent 60 hours a week resupplying bases. Patrick escaped with minor whiplash when one bomb went off 10ft from him.

And he was stranded in his wrecked Mastiff for 26 hours after another roadside blast.

Patrick said: "Attacks came thick and fast."

The Taliban yesterday claimed to have killed a US sailor, kidnapped with a colleague in the eastern province of Logar on Friday. NATO forces continued their hunt for the men, offering local rewards for information.
