An Army sergeant allegedly let loose a burst of fire from an AK47 after he was hauled before a disciplinary hearing, it emerged yesterday.

The colour sergeant was appearing in front of a warrant officer at Gibraltar Barracks in Blackwater, Surrey.

The officer is believed to have ordered the sergeant to end an “inappropriate” relationship with a female soldier.

The sergeant is alleged to have reacted furiously and reached into a bag and produced the rifle.

He is said to have fired off an automatic burst of at least 20 live rounds which left bullet holes in the walls of the office.

The officer hurt his hand when he dived for cover and is now in nearby Frimley Park hospital. Hampshire police were called to the barracks and the sergeant was arrested.

He appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on a charge of possession of a firearm with intent to cause violence.

Burst

The 42-year-old sergeant has been remanded in custody and will face trial at Winchester Crown Court.

The sergeant and officer are members of the Civil and Military Cooperation group – CIMIC – which has returned from Afghanistan.

An Army source said: “No one could believe it when they heard the burst of automatic fire inside the barracks.

“The AK47 is not British Army standard issue.”
