British commanders, serving on Herrick 12 as part of 4 Mechanized Brigade, have confirmed that ordnance and drugs were seized in a recent clearance op in Lashkar Gar, Helmand – the third in a series of actions in the area.
Accompanied by personnel from the Afghan National Police and under the watchful eye of mentors from the 1st Battalion, Scots Guards, the troops seized six-IED pressure plates plus a detonation chord and initiation devices.
Two viable roadside bombs were also found along with rifles and 18kg of opium. Six men suspected of being Taliban insurgents were taken into custody.
The success is another indication of the growing confidence of Afghan personnel, who have increasingly taken responsibility for their own security operations.
The latest ANA actions have included a brigade-level action in Helmand province, which was signed off as successful by British and American mentors.
Both the ANA and ANP have also been instrumental in providing the crucial security for shuras – or meetings – in the central Helmand province settlement of Saidabad following the recent success in Op Black Prince.
An Army spokesman said mentors were impressed with the “fantastic” conduct of the Afghan personnel during the latest operation in Lashkar Gar.
He added: “They led anther methodical clearance of an area of significance, managing not only to detain suspected IED makers but seize devices, drugs and weapons.”
