Changing Schools

Due to frequent moves associated with life in the Armed Forces, the children of Service personnel can face problems with their education. In order to assist with this particular problem Service personnel are often faced with the following options:

  • Arrange for their children to accompany them to a new school.
  • Leave their spouse or partner in one place with their children in their old school.
  • Place their children into a boarding school
  • A combination of all of the above.
  • Changing schools for whatever reason can be a very critical stage for any child regardless of age. There are a number of factors to consider with any change of school:

  • Their child's individual academic strengths and weaknesses.
  • Their child's ability to cope in a different environment away from home.
  • Their child's health and temperament.
  • Personal financial situation and school availability.
  • School availability and location.
  • As parents you will have detailed knowledge of these factors. You will also need to know details of the facilities offered in the area in which you are going to live. You can get professional advice from the Local Authority (LEA) or the Service Children's Education (SCE), a defence agency responsible for providing advice on all aspects in the UK and overseas, and running Service schools in Europe.

This site has been designed to allow Service personnel and their spouses or partners to read through a selection of topics and guides, whilst providing further information and details on Boarding Schools, State Schools and Independent Schools (access to these facilities can be obtained via the navigation bar on the left hand side - see Children's Education).
