The following are extracts from the BFPO regarding mail & parcels

Can items of mail be sent free of charge to troops serving on Op Telic in the Gulf?

  • On 2 April the Prime Minister announced the introduction of a free postal service for individuals serving in the Gulf on Op Telic.
  • From 17 April families will be able to send letters and packets up to 2 kilograms in weight free of charge to named individuals at BFPO addresses in the Gulf
  • Delivery of letters, 'Blueys' and 'e-Blueys', which are the primary means of communication for families, will remain our priority. Packets will be delivered as soon as practicable depending on the operational situation.
  • Please annotate 'TELIC FORCES FREEPOST' on your item of mail
Families and friends of Armed Forces personnel serving in the Gulf should however note that items such as the following should not be sent:

  • Perishable goods - foods like fruit, meat and chocolate…
  • Fragile items - glass, Easter eggs…
  • Heavy or bulky items - photo frames, soft toys…
  • Everyday essentials - all basic toiletries are provided in theatre
  • Magazines containing pictures that might offend the cultural values of host nations, even though these might be widely available in the UK. 'Top shelf' magazines are an obvious example.

  • Can charity food parcels be sent to the troops serving on Op Telic in the Gulf?

No, please be advised that an item of mail up to the maximum weight of 2kgs can be sent to addressed personnel only. Please see our Op Telic page for further information relating to correct posting procedures, correct tariffs and items that can and cannot be sent.

We were told by our local post office that all mail for Kuwait and Iraq has been suspended, is this correct?

No, military mail continues to be sent regularly.

Can you tell me if there are any delays to the mail being sent to the Gulf?

Please be advised we are currently receiving in excess of 15 tonnes of mail per day for Op Telic, therefore, delays in theatre are inevitable at this time. However, please be assured that mail is continuing to be delivered to the Gulf and there have been no reports of delays for mail being sorted and sent from here at the BFPO HQ sorting office. Obviously more time is needed for the sorting of mail once delivered to theatre due to this high volume.

Can you issue me with a BFPO number for my relative/friend serving on Op Telic, I have his/her unit.

Please see the Op Telic page on the MOD website at www.mod.uk for information regarding units serving on Op Telic.

Is there a Parcel service to BFPO locations situated in and around the Gulf?

Due to limitations on airfreight space, a BFPO Worldwide parcel service will not initially be available for Op Telic. This is to prevent any congestion in the delivery of critical stores and supplies to the theatre. Further instructions will be issued if this policy changes.

Is a customs label required on items of mail to and from a BFPO address?

All items posted via BFPO's to and from theatre must comply with British and overseas foreign national Customs regulations. Therefore a customs label is required either a CN22 green label for letter packets or a Parcelforce PF132 labels for Parcels is a requirement. For all items to Op Telic a CN 22 label is required as a Royal Mail

Is an airmail label required on items of mail to and from a BFPO address?

For BFPO static locations based inside Europe an airmail sticker is not a requirement. Static locations based outside Europe do require an airmail label.
Please note that items of mail being sent to Op Telic in the Gulf although charged at an inside Europe Forces rate do require an airmail label.
