The Royal Navy's search and rescue (SAR) unit in Prestwick is the busiest in the UK, official figures show.

HMS Gannet undertook 447 call outs in 2009 - 20% of all UK military SAR operations and 65 more than its previous record of 382 in 2008.

Military officials said the call outs saw assistance given to 378 people.

HMS Gannet's future has been placed in doubt by Ministry of Defence plans to move search and rescue services (SAR) from Prestwick to Glasgow Airport.

When the French take over the SAR duties I bet they will not be half as many call outs as the most with be to Dangerous for them to risk the Choppers on.

Busiest UK Search & Rescue base to move

Despite the Royal Navy’s search and rescue (SAR) unit at HMS Gannet, located within Ayr’s Prestwick Airport in Scotland being the UK’s busiest, it is to close and move to Glasgow Airport under the government’s new SAR contract to be let to Soteria from 2012.

Navy helicopter crew bring assistance to premature twins

In an epic nine-hour sortie, the duty crew of the Royal Navy's Search and Rescue unit at HMS Gannet, Prestwick, delivered a four-strong medical team to the side of twin premature babies last week.

Tasked at 1910hrs on Thursday 11 March 2010, the crew of Lieutenant Andy Ellis, Captain Michael 'Jack' Frost, Royal Marines, Lieutenant Commander Martin 'Florry' Ford and Petty Officer Taff Ashman raced to Glasgow Airport to pick up the specialist team from the Neonatal Transport Service, complete with two incubators - each weighing 320lbs (145kg), before heading north to Stornoway in the Western Isles.

Lets see if the French will do this, I do not think so some how.

Great work Royal Navy and this in  100 years of  Royal Naval Aviation.
