STATE BOARDING SCHOOLS - GENERAL INFORMATION

Service personnel usually take their children with them when they are posted overseas and Service Children's Education (SCE) provides schools in the major overseas command areas. Where children are likely to experience disruption in their education due to frequent postings/drafts of their parents, a boarding school might be considered a suitable option.

Most boarding schools are fee-paying, but some local authorities provide boarding education in Maintained Schools. Many of these schools have a high academic reputation and some of them are selective. The Local Education Authority (LEA) or Central Government pays the tuition fees. Pupil's parents are responsible for paying the boarding element, but Boarding School Allowance (BSA) can be used to pay this. Most Maintained Boarding Schools accept pupils from 11+.

The MoD will also pay the cost of 3 return journeys per child per year (most boarding schools have short breaks, called exeat, every three weeks or so; this means a minimum of 5 return journeys per term). Children with special needs may be entitled to additional journeys. For further details of these allowances please click here.
