SERVICE CHILDREN'S EDUCATION - GENERAL INFORMATION
Service Children's Education (SCE) provides objective and impartial advice on the school opportunities open to service children, irrespective of whether they are in state or independent schools. SCE provides schooling facilities for pupils in Belize, Brunei, Cyprus, Denmark, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Italy, Belgium, Holland and Germany. SCE are also responsible for the provision of help and advice to Service and MoD personnel's families about to be posted overseas or returning to the UK from abroad (this includes advice regarding boarding and other possible provisions within the UK during their absence).
SCE operates in accordance with UK practice including the delivery of the National Curriculum (England and Wales). SCE schools are supported by Child Guidance and Careers Guidance services.
Teachers in SCE schools must have recognised UK professional qualifications and a large majority of teachers are recruited from the UK for service in SCE schools. The remaining teachers are recruited locally, from dependants of Service personnel or other civilians, but the requirement for professional qualifications and the duties placed upon these teachers is exactly the same as for teaching staff employed in the UK.
SCE are able to offer advice and provide assistance on:
Schools overseas
Boarding Education overseas
Inspection Advisory Service
Educational Psychology & Child Guidance Services
Career Service
Parental involvement
Parental responsibilities
Parental preferences
SCE examination and assessment results place them among the leading local education authorities in the United Kingdom. Reports by the Office for Standards in Education, which provides an independent inspection service for SCE schools, have been consistently good and compare favourably with those made on UK schools. The work of SCE schools is backed by SCE's own Inspection Advisory Service, which provides extensive and varied in-service training facilities to ensure that SCE schools are familiar with teaching developments in the UK.
If you are posted abroad or concerned about how Service life is going to affect the education of your child, please do not hesitate to get in touch with them at:
