SCHOOL FEES ALLOWANCES - GENERAL INFORMATION

Guardian's Allowance.
Guardian's Allowance (GA) is provided in respect of Service children placed in the care of a Guardian so that they may attend a particular day school. A Guardian is defined as any person into whose care the child is placed to enable that child to remain at a particular day school that he/she could not attend if resident with their parents. GA is intended to cover the cost of postage, telephone calls, stationery etc. It is not intended to cover day school fees and cannot be claimed for an individual child in conjunction with any other education allowance.

The current rate of GA is £2.51 per day - payable in term time, at weekends and during school holidays. GA is taxable but paid by the MoD.

In English speaking countries where SCE schools are not provided but the local schools teach in the English medium, parents who opt to place their children in the Independent sector may claim two-thirds of the fees and admissible expenses. In non-English speaking countries where SCE schools are not provided, the full cost of fees and admissible expenses may be claimed.
