Career Development
The Armed Forces encourage service personnel to take ownership of their personal and professional development. One feature of this is Career Development and it can be broken down into three main areas:
Career Structure - Each area within the Armed Forces sets out the career courses and training needed for employment in the different trades and describes the targets required for progressing through the ranks. This then provides the framework against which career advice can be given to suit individual circumstances.
Career Courses, Training and Funding - Career courses and training are designed to ensure that the Armed Forces can recruit, train and develop all of the specialist skills that they need and ensure that the right number of people are ready to be promoted. In most cases, service personnel will be working within their chosen primary trade and will be guided through the various career and training requirements as part of their normal work. The career and training requirements are generally the same as those needed for promotion. It will often include wider training and opportunities for other employment together with any benefits and additional pay that certain specialist courses and training may offer.
Career Advancement - Promotion is one of the ways the Armed Forces fills vacancies and rewards those who have shown strong performance and potential. All service personnel are considered at least once every year for promotion to the next rank in their career structure. To progress, service personnel are judged against the eligibility criteria; experience, training, education and recommendation in annual appraisal, for the next rank.
